The General Practice Section sponsors programs and publications of general interest, but directs most programs to the sole practitioner and small-firm lawyer. The section serves as a forum for the exchange of practical ideas and information on how to effectively manage and practice law.

Two Owen & Owens partners have been named as Fellows of the American Bar Foundation: Sam Kaufman (2020) and Julie Cillo (2024).
Selection as a Fellow is recognition of a lawyer who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the highest principles of the legal profession and to the welfare of society. It is a global honor that is limited to one percent (1%) of licensed US lawyers and a limited number of international lawyers.
Joe Owen’s heart for inner city athletes has inspired many. He personally supported many youth, and he provided scholarships that sent hundreds of athletes to FCA Camp. Owen was instrumental in recruiting more FCA staff in Virginia, and he has worked tirelessly to raise over $1 million for ministry needs. He’s been a faithful supporter,

Spencer is a graduate of St. Lawrence University with a B.A. in Philosophy and Economics and Albany Law School of Union University. While at St. Lawrence, he was a member of their Cross Country and Track &
Richmond, Virginia attorney Samuel J. Kaufman, of the law firm Owen & Owens PLC has been named a Senior Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA). Kaufman is managing partner of his firm. A 1999 graduate of the University of Richmond, Kaufman received his Juris Doctor degree from the Albany Law School of Union University in 2002.
The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) has had as its mission, for more than 50 years, “to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the cause of Matrimonial law, to the end that the welfare of the family and society be protected.” The Virginia commitment to this mission is embodied in the 50+ Fellows of the Virginia Chapter.Our Virginia Fellows have met the rigorous standards for Fellowship.
